I'm not really sure, but I think they help in "balancing" your vids.

I hope someone could shed more light on this.

i saw one guy that said he strongly believed it did. If there was pagerank updates one way to see is make a video with 1000 dislikes then see if it gets a pagerank 2 or something.

well youtube dislikes can cause bann on your video,if you have more likes than dislikes so your video will not bann...if you dont have any like and getting many dislikes, Soon your video will get bann!!

if you are getting dislikes so try so get more likes or video can get bann....for more information you can search on interenet!! and if you need help of increasing likes i can help!

Dislikes are a part of a healthy, natural video. I think It would be safe to assume that some are needed to make a video look more genuine. That way it is not suspicious to viewers nor to YT.
It would still be very hard to find out what exactly YT tracks and does not.
