As se900se already said: buying traffic is the fastest & easiest to track way, but it's not effective for everything because, well, if it costs you more to get a customer than the cost of your product (if you even sell a product) then it doesn't work.

- Creating partnership with people who have businesses in related niches, but aren't direct competitors (guest posts, referral bonuses, etc)
- Content marketing- SEO takes a while, but a highly shareable article can give you a nice boost in traffic at first
- Having a business that provides value to people so they refer others &/or talk about it

I think it's better to find out with paid traffic than putting months of effort into creating content and seo to find out it doesn't work.

Try some 'blitzes' of manual contextual comments on bogs, communities and forums with monster traffic (say 500,000 visits or more a month). You offer a freebie (a video , or downloador such) using a clickbait type of lingo. If you do it right, lots of click throughs and referral traffic should follow. You'll have to repeat the blitz on a scheduled basis, since after a burst of immediate visitors, things will settle back to a trickle.
