What do you guys think about SEOMoz and Rand Fishkin? Do you think he actually knows his stuff? I like what they are doing and sometimes use their tools. However, it kinda of makes me think of an old saying "those who can't do....teach."

What do you guys think?

Well its always been a little off for me as to why they dont offer consultation services themselves they do however have some very good information and I follow their blog on a day-to-day basis, some of the tools they provide including the MozRank and trust algorithm has had a positive impact on my SEO campaigns. I think they do know what they are talking about (check out the whiteboard fridays, which is my favorite part) and they have some great insight into true whitehat seo.
 
We have a pro-account at my office with SEOMoz and it does indeed have some excellent tools.

You get much more information via open-site explorer, and they have automatic rank-checking tools which track your keywords in bing, google, and yahoo (as well as how many visits each keyword is sending)

It works excellent as a quick look at where are rankings are, but I always use another third party program to double check their rankings.

The competitive analysis tools are pretty stellar as well - I've come to trust their ranking metrics (MozRank or whatever they call it) a little more than Pagerank.

All in all I would say the subscription is worth it IF your boss pays for it. If he/she doesn't chances are I probably wouldn't use it on my own as there's plenty of free tools that do the same work.

But as a white-hatter (well mostly ;)) they do offer excellent tips - I check up on their blog regularly and can honestly say their articles have provided me with the knowledge to get a fair share of white hat backlinks.

Yea i use their tools as well. The mozrank has been surprisingly accurate for me.
 
They know what they're doing alright.

Where's SEOMoz?

Good content and good tools.
 
From what I've seen the tools that SEOMOz make are great. Although to be honest I like to use my own personal tools and stay out of the cloud, especially for SEO stuff.

Just imagine all of the data that SEOMoz has, that's not something that I feel comfortable providing to anyone.
 
SEO Moz is a very good source, there are only a handful who can explain difficult topics for the layman (ever watched his whiteboard friday?). I think he is from his personality more a teaching guy, its his type of thing to stand in front of a crowd giving speeches etc, not mine for sure... While often they also just fish in the dark, at least Rand makes it sound smart... ;)
 
I think some people don't know that they started out as an seo provider that later transitioned to solely providing a tool set.

I've had drinks with him in 'mixed company' at several conferences. He can hash out fresh ideas with the seo vetrans one minute and then turn around and spend an hour explaining the basics to someone who knows nothing about search. Just because he's that excited about sharing the information and getting someone else to become excited about what they might be able to do. You'd be hard pressed to find a nicer guy.
 
I'm not a huge fan. Having Paddy Moogan tell me that building backlinks with appropriate anchor text will help with SERPS isn't really the sort of expert analysis I would be looking for.
 
SEOmoz worth 99$/month by their tools, expecially link juicy finder and keyword difficult analysis. I really don't read their toughts, I do prefer you guys here on bhw. But, like I said, it's a must have on your package.

The seomoz blog is legendary for useful information. The quote that "those who can't do....teach," doesn't apply here because he certainly can 'do' as SEOmoz did consulting before they switched to providing tools. I think a better way to phrase that quote in this scenario would be: "Those that can do better....innovate" His innovation is teaching through the blog & offering time saving tools that fellow experts would find useful. I personally find SEOmoz the best SEO resource on the web hands down.

Full disclosure: I am a pro member at SEOmoz for 2 years. Been reading BHW for about a year.
 
Like many other people in this post I love SEOMoz.

Its one of those websites that I visit on a daily basis.
 
I find them sounding a lot like Matt Cutts and consider them to be an unofficial extension of the Google propaganda machine. It looks like I'm in the minority on that...

No, I agree with you. I like their tools more than the other stuff. Sometimes I feel like they focus on meaningless details instead of the bigger picture. I bet matt cutts definitely feeds them certain stuff to say.

You are definitely right. The only concern that I think i might have is that Matt Cutts influences what they say and tell us all.
 
I have followed my primary site's ranking on SEOmoz since they started but never bought into the premium service. At one time in the past year they ranked my site 8.5 out of 10. A few weeks later the site ranked 4 out of 10. One of the principals answered my query about it, saying that 1. they get so many requests the data sources (like Yahoo) sometimes block access and that affects ranking, and 2. they are trying to improve their algos. Today I checked and my site got a 41% using their latest algo and %-based ranking system but I noticed several data sources were showing 0 when my own research showed respectable numbers.

I can't complain since I don't pay them.
 
Seomoz has valuable content and info. I think they portray themselves as a bit more white-hat than they really are but they are a trusted voice in the community. I don't take any one source as gospel, but you take the good and throw out the trash. Overall, I'd hate to be without them, lots of good intel there.
