I think these are 2 huge ways to get lots of direct traffic and quality backlinks, which of course will raise your position in the search engines. You never know when something will go "viral". A forum thread could easily get 10,000 to 20,000 views in a month on a popular forum. Start something controversial. Same with guest blog posts. Write a guest blog post with a link to your site and it could spread/be scraped onto hundreds of other sites. Free backlinks + direct traffic. They take the most work, but hey you can always outsource if you don't have time.
