Content pillars not only make it easier for Google Bot to see all your content, pillars also provide LOTS OF CONTEXT

What are the types of pillars you use?

I use glossaries, dictionaries, category-specific tutorials, you?

If you are talking about "Content pillars" as glossaries, dictionaries, category-specific tutorials, then no. I don't use content pillars except basic category pages.

The content pillars you are talking about makes little to no use in my eyes. It does not provide context or SEO value. Maybe some internal link value but it does not differ much from a category page.

A good category-specific tutorials page may be useful for real readers but 99% of the time it's not the landing page either.
I haven't seen a "glossaries, dictionaries, category-specific tutorials" kind of page shown in serps for a long time.

A pillar article is another thing which includes comprehensive info and links out to other related content.

What is everyone's opinion on linking from topic page to topic page?

Just now I create links only from pillar page to topic pages and a returning link back and I think is probably standard but I am not sure that is the best user navigation wise. I do that as sometimes the wrong topic comes up on searches on account of the anchor text used on the wrong topic page in the link to the correct topic page. Is that a typical issue in pillar topic structures?
