I guess it depends if you have the resources to compete with them.

It's rather hard to advise you without even knowing the country and niche you are trying to break into.
But, hey, If you are willing to invest enough time and money to do something better than they are doing,
I don't see how you can't beat them.

How will you fight with them?

If you are just going to be cheaper then don't bother.

Fighting with a big shark is not an easy task. Firstly ask yourself do you have enough money, time and knowledge to invest, imagine they control the main traffic so you have to offer something cheaper/better to attract people attention, when you do so you will attract sharks attention too and i bet they will do as much as they can to erase you :) so my offer for you is to create and write out the very logical big PLAN how you gonna do it, what you will do if, what you will do when.. etc.. I really wish that you succeed in this trip.

    Best of luck!

Could you have a different editorial style? Possibly a bit edgier.

Possibly concentrate on a sub niche and be more of an expert at that.

What are you going to do that is better than them? If you are going to do the same thing as them, the don't bother. But, if you are going to take what they do and add value to something that is lacking in that area, then go for it. Otherwise, you are wasting your time.

It depends on how much of a brand they have. You can't compare Amazon to BHW, just saying.
It also depends on how much money they invest to keep the brand up.

For instance a company can still be a brand but not actually do much to keep that brand up. They could be the only company in that niche and over many years has become a popular brand without any costly advertising.

Do they have active social channels like Facebook? or another social channel that is popular in your country? Offer people to join your social channel with insentives such as discounts. Make sure your social channel(s) are active.

Start a PPC campaign, not just for ROI per click, but to increase your presence and brand.

Have people join your newsletter for an incentive like an ebook or a discount. Keep your newsletters active.

Try banner advertising in your niche. If your advertising to get visabilty for your entire city or country then you're going to need to advertise on national websites, this can become very expensive but can give you a great ROI in the long run.

You can even do offline advertising such as newspapers, radio adverts, tv adverts, sponsor well known brands.

It all depends on what you're offering. For example if you're promoting a groupon style of site (which you would want to promote to near enough anyone in your country) then it all comes down to how much more of a brand you can do than your competitor.

If you can offer something better or cheaper than your competitor then you will win in the long run.

If you want to compete with a site that's already hugely branded that most of your country knows already, you're going to need a SOLID business plan and some very, very deep pockets to compete...

    Listen Judoka.

Do you honestly want to overcome this competitor from your heart? (notice how I didn't say "beat", they're just an obstacle...that's up to you)

If you answered yes, you CAN become the new leader.
What you may be forgetting is, the worry you are feeling right now of taking on this competitor is what has kept them on top. Being big doesn't make you the best.
If I had any marketing advice to lend you, it will be to use your element of surprise properly. They're not afraid of some new punk so they shouldn't act straight away.

If you offer better/and or more cost-effective product than them, THEY will have to change to compete with YOU.......and you my friend have just made them shiver.

just go ahead and fight for what you desire, of course when you have enough ability to fight down them :3
