yes, you can get more benefits if your site is google news approved. If your site is not google news approved then you can't get more business from your site.

Yes, it is dominated by popular brands/company but every now and then you can get yours ranked in page 1 if it is highly relevant.

In my niche is almost no chance to get to page 1 in Google news. It is flooded with news sites and these are always the same websites. At lest for me it is not worth the effort.

You are right , it is dominated by some top websites or real news sites. Hard to compete in this niche.

Its depends on content relevancy and competition.
If its the local news then chances are higher that your post will show in the google news section because of the competition.

I've seen article go viral on a bi-weekly to monthly basis from a '1-man' operated site but he works hard and has guest posts of related content

It is hard to rank in this niche. Big news sites have lot of authority and they dominate top ranks.
