Why? What makes it such a good skill?

I was writing code in the late 90's btw.

I'm a top 1% dev. I can write pretty much anything I want. 10's of thousands of lines of code. I can write linux drivers in C. I can write massively parallel scalable micro service based architectures. I can create database setups with TB's of data that's lightning fast. All that shit and more.

But you know how much of a part it's played in me reaching 7 figures?

Very very very little.

The top 2 things that got me there is 1) Sales and 2) Copywriting.

I just happened to have started out as a tech geek in the 90's, so I have all those skills.

I know countless great devs and none of them are good at business.

And in my day devs were rare. Now, everyone wants to be a Python dev.

Like really, what are you going to do with Python?

Let's say you're shit hot, and you can build an amazing SaaS company. How do you get customers? It's not easy if you have no sales/marketing skills, and by skills, I mean YEARS of refining your craft. This stuff takes a long time to learn. It's not something you can read a couple articles on. Heck, there's just SO much most people have no idea about. People don't even know what they don't know.

So what do you do? Get a job? Make $94k/year as a python dev? (https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Google/salaries/Python-Developer) In the US. Less if you're in Europe.

The kid's making $800/week dicking around on the web at 18. That's £2850/month. so he's making a bit under half what a top python quant makes. Do you know how hard it would be to make it up to the level where you can get that job? He'd need 10 years solid python, finance and math experience.

So why exactly is python one of the best skills you can have?

Even Google only pays their python devs about $150k-$160k/year, and you have to be top 0.05% to 0.01% to get into google. Certainly 0.01% to thrive.

What a giant waste of time, when you can just learn how to sell.

And how do you learn how to sell?

Go on youtube and type "how to sell". Find a few top sales trainers and study their stuff, then pick up the phone and start dialing. Record yourself. Listen and compare to the top sales guys. Pickup the phone again and repeat.

You're not going to do 10,000 calls and still suck at sales.

Most people won't even do 10 calls.

I once landed an office job on Wall Street selling stocks. Was shit at it so I left but always wondered what would happen now that I’m a little bit better at sales.

Why did you reccomened copywriting instead of coding? the way AI writing works made it seem rebundant.
To make it in the copywrite business wouldn't one need to spend like 10 years of their life pursuing a PhD and then spending countless hours applying for big journal sites? Other than that It seemed like AI writing was deceng enough.
I'm asking this because my first dollars online was from copywriting but i feel like its a dying trade due to ai thats why im currently trying to learn coding..

It's fine to go to clubs and parties, but while doing that keep your projects in sight.
Even if that's a hobby, gym, sales tactics, digital marketing or coding.

If those guys are partying every other day, fully funded by parents and doing nothing to grow personally, they are bunch of bums.

Why would you need a PhD to do copywriting?

You read copywriting books like cashvertising and works by people like Gary Halbert and Eugene Schwartz and you practice writing.

Why would you apply to big journal sites? What can they do for you? Unless you're talking about getting a job as a copywriter, but this isn't a career advice thread :-) The forum isn't about careers/jobs, it's about being a digital marketer and making money online.

But by that AI logic you may as well do nothing and go on unemployment benefits and wait out artificial general intelligence and universal income.. Sure, eventually it'll probably do a lot, but that's not going to stop me building businesses now.

You're learning copywriting and sales so you can sell your own products online. Not get a job.

Learning Python doesn't help you sell online. You're just competing with guys with both money and business skills who are making SaaS companies vs you, a lone Python programmer.

Forget SEO, Python and all the BS skills.

SEO is not a transferrable skill. It requires immense investment and it's only getting worse. Someone who was an SEO god in 2012 may as well be a granny on the street when it comes to SEO in 2022. The same will apply in 2032. It's a useless skill unless you can leverage it now with the above.

If you had skills, right now, you could go and create a $50k/mo SMMA business by just picking up the phone, selling and being able to get your clients leads/clients through ads.

With the above skills you can do almost anything to make money. Almost no one can fucking sell, copywrite or market. I can sell, and I can write. I rarely come across others who can. Most people are terrible at sales. Terrible.

Alex Becker can sell, and he can market. He just sold Hyros for $110m.

Alex Hormozi can sell, and he can market.(Among other things) - He clears $100m/year.

You could go become a plumber. If you can sell, copywrite and market, you're going to make a shit-ton of money, and end up having to hire other plumbers because of all the work you have.

SEO won't get you there ;-)

Being able to create a value proposition around your business, then transfer that value proposition on paper(copywriting), on the phone or in person(sales) and then spread the word of that value proposition(advertising/marketing) is how you make money. Period.

Please, forget Python and SEO. You'll thank me in 10 years when you're making $200k/mo and scaling so fast you can barley handle it.

what about coding in general? and when I meant that I was referring to writing for others/yourself.
Furthermore, when I brought up AI taking over i was genuinely worried with how writers may be limited to only working for big box sites or else AI can do just as well. I've seen some very impressive AI copywrites, bigbox sites would lose all their credibility if they've decided to use those AIs but small/medium sites wouldn't.

not looking for career advice though i want to know your forecasts on the future of programming

No one really knows the effect of AI, but if you worry about it and not take action, then that's a certain future of failure. So you may as well act as if the future is going to be fine and just worry about today.

The bottom line is if you want to make money, focus on the things I listed above. sales, creating a value proposition, marketing, copywriting. AI isn't going to do everything for people. It can make a decent title/ad copy, but it's not a substitute for you having the core business/marketing skills. There's so so much more to succeeding than just making an ad or a good title.

If you want to be a programmer and enjoy writing code, then learn Python or another language.

If you want financial freedom, learn sales, copywriting, marketing and very practical business skills.

I'd personally avoid all the mindset stuff. :)

It's just fluff, and it's very "dopamine hit" based content. It feels good, but it does jack shit.

There is no mindset of the wealthy for the most part.

The trick is just waking up and working. Work, work and more work. Real work. You learn mostly by doing. The reading is helpful as you are doing, but reading by its self won't do anything.

It would be like trying to learn Python by reading only. You wouldn't be able to actually code anything useful after just reading. Your brain just doesn't absorb information without the doing. It's just how its built.

So rather than try to find books. Start projects, and then identify "What am I missing here that's causing me to fail".

The only difference between the wealthy and the rest is they tend to just get out of bed and focus exclusively on important work that moves them forward. Most other people either read, watch videos or get distracted and watch netflix.

I'd start with cashvertising and alex hormozi's book "100m offers". Then from there go and start a business and focus on simple stuff. Get customers, make sales, get money in the door. $0 to $1mil/year should be a ruthless focus on "get money in the door".

I really enjoy programming and make my own tools/websites. Even if AI somehow takes over, I'd be still learning.

I don’t know what to do and I’ve got a big fat ? inside my head atm so any and all advice will be appreciated

Dude, you're 18. You're young. You're talking about wasting your time as if you're 30 lol.

When I was 18, I never thought this place existed, hell, even making money on the internet. Yet, you did a lot of things and made some progress. I'm 25 now. I joined this forum back in 2020 and I was scared, everyone was good at everything. I only had basic programming knowledge. I simply ran away. I've been on internet for so long and I made zero dollars. Now i'm doing a comeback :D (what i'm saying is i'm older than you and yet i haven't money nor given up.)

Look, You've accomplished something. You made some money, give yourself a break :) Now that you have time and some money to spend. start small, take some project you can work in the Make Money section. Instead of playing and watch YT, try to learn something like Python or JS, you don't need to buy a course when there's everything on the net ;)

And Don't forget about yourself. go outside, socialize, hit the gym . Do what you like to do :) It's not the end of the world.

Just take it easy, take a rest. Think about where do you wanna start. and comeback here to kick ass :)

I am. I love both, but I recognize that my time is best spent on the business side. I use my tech skills where I can though.

If you ENJOY programming then do it for pure fun. Don't try to make money out of it. Just enjoy it. It's a lot of fun. Code things that excite you.

Acquiring leads isn't sales, but it's a separate and equally important skill.

Sales is closing deals, warm and cold. Warm = you acquired the lead through marketing and set an appointment. Cold = You just acquired the lead through searching and reach out to them cold.

To learn sales, just pick up the phone and start failing.

Then go to youtube and start with learn sales. There's a lot of great material. Alex Hormozi and Jordan Belfort are good. Grant Cardone is *ok*. You can still learn from him, but a lot of his stuff is just pure self promotion.

I just don't attribute it to my success, and it's not something to focus on for money. Do it for pure enjoyment.

Also.. AI is going to takeover most dev work. Not now, or in 2 years, but in 10 years AI will be able to do most dev work. Maybe even 5-6 at the rate things are going. In 10 to 12 years we'll like have an AGI that will not only write code, but design from its own will.

Being able to sell will never get old.

If you're stuck on an island with only a few 100 people then being able to sell will put you in a position to accumulate more resources and be successful.




Selling is a skill that you develop. A few people are good naturally, but believe me, it takes time to refine. There are specific things you do to sell that are all learnable. It's not just being a fancy talker.

It's very hard to be a dev and find a partner who's good at business/sales/marketing.

If you're a business/marketing/sales guy, you probably won't even need to partner with a dev. You'll just hire a good one for $10k/mo, or a top one for $15k-$20k/mo, maybe give them 2-5% of the company. And this is something you only learn with experience.. You don't just give away 5% of your company. You set achievement milestones for the dev where he gets 1% per year over the first 5 years. Or 0.5% per year over 10 years, or he gets 5% after 5 years. You hold all the cards if you're the guy that can make the money.

@splishsplash. I manage my own online and physical business with 90% export outside my country. First I was a marketer for 7 years, then 2-3 switched to sales and then I opened my own afterwards. To come to your question yeah I dont need someone in marketing like a HEAD. I just see the reports of the employees every week what needs to be changed and so and then outsource work to them.
