A lot of you guys are missing the point - many people aren't trying to monetize their fan pages directly - they are products, stores, locations, people etc. that are trying to prove their worth with social currency.
A high number of likes - whether real or not - can be very beneficial. Also, real people are much more likely to like a page when it already has many likes. This really helps local businesses that aren't attempting to monetize - I've even been able to get newspaper articles etc. for my clients because of their large facebook pages - which then led to real likes in the area.
