I have two sites in a row now that I've used Yoast instead of All in One SEO and Google isn't picking up the Meta Descriptions. I've contacted both the Theme designer and Yoast and both say everything is set up properly. I've also used checked it with some Meta Description tools and it picks up the correct description. I read that Google could change the Meta Description to something more relevant but since this issue only happened when using Yoast I'm wondering if it has something to do with the plug in.

    Any advice?

I use Yoast on all of my sites and never had that problem. Probably something about the theme you're using that conflicts with it, the theme meta descriptions might override the Yoast settings.

Yoast sucks because it cant even handle the most crucial tasks

I'm surprised your titles aren't messed up as well
