Keep in mind that I haven't tried this, and don't even know if it would work, so don't get your hopes up.

I remembered seeing some sort of ad for those USB 'pens' that scan actual text from books or other types of reading material and then the text can be transferred to a computer. I can't remember the actual name of these devices though.

I'm not quite sure how these type of devices work. Do they render an actual .txt file? or does it scan an image file?

If, in fact, it does scan .txt I could see this being extremely useful as you could scan various documents that aren't on the net and submit them as unique content. Even if it renders an image file, perhaps there is a program/service that could translate the .jpg to .txt like something similar to a captcha bypasser.

It's a long shot, but I think this could be really beneficial if it would work. Anyone got any more information on these things?

what about a scanner? is there a scanner out that can convert scanned papers into .txt files? Im sure the technology is around, and if it is, it would work a dream imo.

Thanks for the link. Do you have any experience with this kind of software? I think we may be on to something.
 
I have not used it, seems it may be better to just fire up DNS [dragon naturally]

costs $115 and thats one of the cheapest. But imo, definitely a good investment.

We are defo on to something here. Library + scan2word + AC + that new AC competitor = $$

I agree, and I have been doing the same as well. But it can be a pain in the ass setting up DNS and also the latter might help out people who don't have a microphone but have a scanner handy.
 
what I was looking at was recovery of $100+ will have to look at the free example I did not look into it too deep.
 
This is called OCR (optical character reader) and I'm sure there are some free ones out there... I have one Abbey Fine Reader, which is not bad and it came with the scanner.. but I lost the CD I think, if I find it ill upload it for you...
 
I use the newest version of Abbey Fine Reader, found a cracked version on a torrent site and it works like a CHARM. I even use it to scan my school notes to archive them =)

Did you read the reviews there at scanstore? People were saying it did not
work very well.

I looked into this awhile back.....wanted one to be able to do library research.
All the reviews said things like it took too long and you had to be very
careful and consistant with your scan to get a good result.

You might want to check out more reviews before you buy.

How quality is the outcome? Are there a lot of spelling errors?
 
I get very minimal spelling errors, but then again it also depends on the quality/dpi of your scanner and of the article. On average I get 3-5 spelling errors per 500 words, and if the program is unsure of what the letter is it will highlight it in red so you can manually review it
 
Woh this is a good idea. I do almost the same thing right now but I use a speaking program.
 
Scan and OCR takes less time and you will have less errors to correct ;)
 
WRONG Forum. There is a whole forum created for AC. Are you blind?
