what do you guys do to encourage clients to write positive yelp reviews? do any of you have a way of determining whether a prospective client has a good, active yelp account?

Make sure your service is the best it can be, there's no real "all seeing eye" in this situation.

thanks. yeah, i know there are no shortcuts here, but it just seems that some competitors have a disproportionate # of high reviews. it's frustrating.

You can tell if a client is happy with your services. (if they are) Right before you conclude your services ask them if they are active on yelp. They will tell you if they even have an account. Ask them if they regularly write reviews. If they do, let them know that if they were happy with your services please write a review. Usually 1 out of 3 people will actually go through the trouble of doing it.

What does your competitors have that you don't? Are they running any sort of promotion that would draw in more eyes & clicks? Does your competitor pay for the premium Yelp accounts to help them promote their business?

Ask yourself those questions and see if you can match or do something better than your competitors.
