Wrong question really. Rather than ask what type of software is better, more helpful to ask which type of linking is worth more.
I personally love BMD but Scuttle/Pligg/other-bookmark-sites links are almost worthless. With very rare exceptions - Reddit and Scuttle come to mind - they almost never appear in the SERPs for me.
Forum/guestbook/mosets tree etc. spamming - XRumer does it very well, but is all that activity actually worth a spit, particularly when you daren't link up directly to your money sites?
Blog commenting - loads of software for that and they nearly always appear in the SERPs if done the right way (no, not comment spamming, the other kind) AND can be linked to your money pages .
Directory submissions - again, loads of software to do the job but about as much long lasting link juice as all those Polish scuttle/pligg/trojan sites.
Finally we have what SENuke does, with the exception of the above-mentioned bookmarking - blogs/rss directories/video/web 2.0 etc. All these properties ARE worth the effort but NOT the way SENuke tends to handle the blogs and web2.0 in particular (brain-dead spun-text mega-boring pages). Rather than use very, very expensive software like SENuke ($127 A MONTH!!) to produce loads of pages, it's way, way better to hand produce fewer, better done and longer lasting properties that gain in authority, readership and natural page rank over time.
I produce a lot of pages in a year, but in a way that naturally gains authority for the sites concerned. Actively seeking spam links - like SEOlinkpro does - is pointless almost to the point of being moronic. XRumer and BMD are lovely bits of kit, but is all that effort actually worth a light?
The very best kind of automation available to online marketers at the moment is WordPress and all the template and plugin available for it. And most of that is free.
