is there a difference when using one or the other. does it affect SEO in any matter? also when you link to one or to the other. is it seen as the same link or different links?

If you go to google.com it redirects to http://www.google.com. Just something to think about.

This is no matter if you using www. or without www. But you must allow google to know, what you want use. Don't try use both of them in the same time, because this sound like a duplicate content. Trust me.
