My site is a few months old and is ranking well for dozens of keywords. We built thousands of links in a short amount of time since the domain was aged from the late 1990's.

Within 30 days a little over a thousand pages were indexed on the site. I was pretty happy about that. About a month later Google dropped 300 pages! I am talking the site: command...

Originally these pages had content that was given to me by my vendors. That was up there for oh say about a month & a half or so. Recently I hired a writer to go back & re-write every single page by hand to make it somewhat unique.

My rankings are getting better week after week because I'm still buildings lots of links. But my page count is going down week after week.

Either it is Google-Dance, or you've been sandboxed slowly.

But NEVER stop building backlinks, if you do stop building them Google will confirm you to be spamming backlinks. So just keep building backlinks but in a lesser quantity than before (perhaps 30-50 per day).

The CNN thing is related to a different problem and it's not a Google dance or sandboxing. It is quite normal if you submit a million page website to Google a month later 80% will be indexed. Four months later 10% will be indexed. It's an arse but Google does it. If you build links to the cog pages (the second tier pages that link out to the individual pages) and have good site structure i.e. 100 links on every page, three click rule etc. You'll find after about eight months they will start to creep back into the index.

I did suspect this effect was partly due to spun content/dupe content but I'm glad to hear its happening with unique content as well.

Just keep building links, obviously do a set of sitemaps, setup a cron job to keep the pages fresh and speed up the spiders and you'll be fine in the long run. Also make sure you are using the canonical tag and optimise whatever you can to improve the site bounce rate. Who did you hire to rewrite the content?
