I thought Google doesn't give a penalty for hosting downtime if the site comes back not long after. The past week my site had dowtime 2 times. I checked my rank today and noticed that some of my keywords dropped. Checked my site and sure enough hosting was down again, probably was already down for a couple hours. I am sure the drop was a result of that, so you better get a good hosting!!

Btw, did anyone see this and knows how long till a site comes back from a "penalty" like this?

What is your load speed like? Install yslow into your browser and see what the load average is, also check the load in your cpanel!

Sites have to be quick these days, Google does give slaps to sites that take ages to load, I have known sites to be dead for a week and only slip a spot or two

Have you checked the IP of the host? If its up and down then you might be on a shitty IP thats shared with spammers, this could cause issues with your own website

Sounds like you need to find a new host I would recommend then worry about it then.

I've had a site down 5 days straight and the homepage was no longer showing in the index. However about a week after I got it back up the number 3 ranking returned.

Google does penalizes websites for downtime... I think, if your website is down for more than 36 hours it may get Google penalty.

My website took approx. 1 week from recovering from the fall in rankings.

That's not a penalty and neither is the OPs. It's just a temporary devaluation of your rankings, based on the fact that there's no fucking site to which to send the visitors.

If it had indeed been a penalty (highly unlikely for even extended periods of downtime), then it would take you a LONG time to recover.

Last year I was using a free host for 1 website and it was down for 1 week and gone from google.
After I moved website to a paid host I had to wait ~1 month to get initial ranking back.
I just waited and created a few backlins (~1000).

I think this is written in g webmaster guidelines: you are responsible to keep website 100% online. not host, so... get a good host.

1 vps 1GB ram/cpanel for 25$-35$ can host 100 simple/medium websites/blogs without problems.
