If you're referencing what I think you are, I remember YTC's forum, DG, and the "post big money pics itt" thread. Was so mindblowingly inspirational when I was first starting. Someday I will create a similar thread on BHW.
 
Just report the spammers and if they bother you, put the users on your ignore list - there aren't too many users at once, maybe 3-5 - so you don't have to wait until the mods ban them, however they're pretty quick with the hammer.
 
I wondered the same this morning, spammers! Thought I landed on the wrong forum haha.
