OK, so I have two strong pages on my site. Let's call them Widgets, and Widget Costs.

My Widget Costs page is ranking beautifully at #1 for "widget costs".

However, my Widget Costs page is also ranking for "widgets", mid way up the second page. I would much prefer my Widgets page to rank for "widgets", and I strongly believe the Widgets page would rank higher than the Widget Costs page, if I could just get Google to rank it.

This problem has existed for several months. I've read a ton of articles about the issue, but I can't resolve it.

Here's what I have done so far to the Widgets page:

    • strengthened the page with more text content above the fold
    • more images with ALT tags
    • added more content (about 2000 words now)
    • added outbound links to authority sources
    • checked for over-optimisation (all green markers in Yoast SEO plugin)
    • restructured site so Widget Costs page is one of many child pages of Widgets page, with breadcrumbs on all child pages linking to Widgets parent page
    • got a Wikipedia link to Widgets page
    • linked from home page to Widgets page
    • checked to ensure the Widgets Costs page isn't over-powering the Widgets page with link authority (both are about equal)
    • in GWT asked Google to reindex
Struggling for more ideas here. Does anyone have any suggestions? Appreciate your help.

What about social media sharing stuffs? Have you used them for Widgets page too?

Try to remove breadcrumbs and then submit to GWT? Then re-add and re-submit later on?

Have you tried above methods too?

Thank you for your suggestions. Removing and re-adding the breadcrumbs doesn't work, tried that before.

Just checked how many times both pages have been shared on FB (our primary channel), and neither has been shared at all. This was a little surprising because our posts get shared all the time, but these are static info pages that just aren't as shareable I guess. Anyway I have a 1000-strong FB group, so I've asked my followers to share the Widgets page. Let's see if that helps.

Any other suggestions? Has anyone had a similar issue with their sites? Did you overcome it? How?

No further suggestions from anyone? Surely others have encountered a similar issue?

I had an issue link this for a few months.

The first thing I did was built more blog posts about it. which were very relevant to "widgets". I dripped them over a few months and the rankings came slowly as each post was released.

I also got a few pbn links with exact match anchor.

Taken about 8-10 weeks but it ranked.

Yes I have one website with the same problem. It happeneds when the subject is similar (or talking about them in both pages) and google think that the page is covering both "widgets" and "widget costs" eventhough you have more optimized pages covering "widgets".

i had a somewhat similar situation before. im not saying this is the answer - it just worked for me.
all i did was create more pages/posts and put a link in context to the page i wanted to rank. i continued this interlinking for like 10 pages before i saw results, but who knows how much it really takes, and if it even works.
    just my 2 cents

Thank you for sharing your experience.

The entire site is about "Widgets", and many of the posts are internally linked to the main Widgets page. Actually just ordered some links for the Widgets page, so maybe this will help.

I think this is EXACTLY the problem I have, but as the entire site is about Widgets, I don't know how to resolve it. Any thoughts?

Add a link on the top of widget cost page to widget page with the anchor "widget"
"If you are interested about widget, just take a look to our widget page"

Question.... Widget Costs page has quite a lot of user generated content (blog comments), but the Widgets page does not. How much of a difference do you think this makes?
