I have had several clients removing my tag/ link within the footer, I remember a while ago some code that stopped this by encrypting the link.

Anyone remember this.

Cant remember its name thats the problem.
 
Why would you want to delete them? In my opinion it looks ugly on a site, besides that - if you're a good designer you won't need those links for either SEO or obtaining new clients. I think it's even worse that you actually want to prohibit your clients from removing them.
 
Links are links, my clients(s) have very high PR sites and their links help allot, apart from that I have these as part of my portfolio, if my tag is not on the page anyone could have designed it.

I actually have a 10% fee for clients to remove the link, reason is if you have done a good job and you are proud of your work why not leave a link? how does it hurt the client?

I explain this to them, 95% of them don't have an issue.

The way I do it OP is php file includes, host a small text file on your server with your link html and reference it in to the clients footer. They see the php tags, get scared and don't touch it.

chances are though if they are hiring you they don't know html well enough to remove it.
 
just say to them that you would like to pay for a graphic link at the bottom of the site, and send them a few bucks every month for it. That way you have a great constant contact setup with your clients, they keep your footer, and make money. They think that you are maybe losing out? well no, as the traffic pays the costs, and you've already included extra in your bill to cover a few months.

Done. Next. :)
 
I still stay with my point, it looks ugly. I will give you a 100% guarantee that any reputable brand will not ever place your link on their site. And as said, you should be able to get better/more high PR links other places than your
clients' sites, same counts for obtaining clients.
 
You need to make a decision
Which is more important to you,
The clients you have or the clients you hope to get.

I know if I was a client and I onjedted to you having your link on my site.
No matter how good you are, Instead of recommending you . I would be telling people how petty you are even after i hired someone to remove your link.

Conversation would go something like this

Friend of client, I love your site, who done it for you
Me, He is good but a bit of an asshole, I had to hire somebody to fix a problem he stuck me with
 
Your best bet is to put it in the design of the template, it may not be clickable but your name will be there.
 
It is their site. They can do what they damn well please with it.

None of my customers ever had a complaint, but all I do is put a link on the home page only saying "website design by XXX, www.xxx.???."

I don't like site wide links, and the home page usually has the highest PR.

How many 'reputable brands' have you bought websites for?

I know some of the best design studios in the world use this method. If you do a good job for the client i bet they give 0 fucks.
 
For enough companies to be able saying what I said. I'm talking about liquor, food and high end car brands.
 
Offer them a discount in exchange they will have to keep your links.
Unfortunately many will remove them after some time
 
i don't believe it is wise to force a customer, sure, make it harder to remove, within reason.

you can try Google for "broken theme link encryption". I do assume you are using wordpress
 
You just make the theme to work only with your footer. It will force most of the users not to remove your link.
 
You should clear this with your client at the time of contract itself...
