[WP]Does using default permalink structure hurt SEO a lot?

I've searched around, but couldn't find an answer accurate enough. Yoast recommends %post name%, but since WordPress won't allow me using another without getting an error, I have no option. I've read around, but it seems that I can not change the settings to %post name. So, how bad it is for my SEO?

Yes you can. Go to your back end dashboard panel. Scroll down to Settings and in the drop drown choose "permalinks". Then choose option number number 6: Custom Structure and after you save it will have updated your permalinks. Hope this helps.

Before you post more tips, guys on how to use the panel (I am not that noob), I will say that the links are broken and the only option that works is the custom one.
I have tried the .htaccess method, the mod_rewrite method, but none of them helped. When I change the option to %postname the pages are messed up and unavailable by the webserver.

I guess your page URLs are like ?pageid=xxx. If yes, You lose some On-Site SEO benefits without using "inurl" on your page url.

Yep. The default is ID. I will appreciate someone helping me with the issue then. The things I have tried do not resolve the dumb "page not found" problem. It is both focked up on my site and on my local machine, where I test stuff with WordPress. Activating the rewrite_module does not change anything.

Is your .htaccess writeable? I had this problem once and that was the issue.

Yep, it is totally writeable. Could you share the content of your .htaccess file?

Very strange, could it be your hosts settings somewhere? Have you tried enabling the custom permalink and then updating a post on the site manually afterwards?

I confirm my .htaccess is the same as thetraveller's. I tried adding a new post and even a new page after changing to /%postname/, but it is still screwed up and 'notfound'.
