Found an expired domain, but really can't decide whether to get it or not. It has only one referring domain, but that domain is a PR8 .edu site. The link can be found on many pages there, among them the root homepage (one of the first links when viewing page source). Do you think it would be worth getting just for that one backlink?

I would not take it. Only 2 links from 1 website count, so BL are good but quantity most come from different sources :) Look for another one!
 
Registrations in the .EDU domain are reserved for colleges and universities that grant degrees at the bachelor, master and doctoral level, or its foreign equivalent. Each college or university may register only one .EDU Web Address. Graduate programs, remote campuses, etc., cannot obtain a .EDU Web Address of their own. Instead, they should obtain a third-level domain beneath the second-level domain of their institution. Inquiries should be directed to the registrant of the second-level domain.

K-12 schools and community colleges are typically registered under country domains such as .US.

I'm going to use this trick for adwords campaigns and meta titles in the future.

No it's not worth getting because .edu sites are updated extremely regularly, and I guarantee that link especially if it appears somewhere on the homepage will disappear asap.
 
PR doesn't mean anything nowadays. When you're buying an expired domain the #1 thing you should be looking at is the number of quality, unique domains (read: domains, not just links) pointing back to it. PR can be faked and just because it's a .edu doesn't mean getting links from it will help you rank. Don't listen to anyone who says backlinks aren't that important. It's all about that there links and always will be. DA and PA can also be faked, remember that too.
 
I would grab it if it is on the homepage and it is expired (available at $10). It also depends on how related is the site to your niche.
 
I would have to pass and keep looking. Something better will surely show up.
