Would You Buy This Expired Domain?

There's a brandable domain on a marketplace that is perfect to use as a money site for my next project. Even a few of the former urls with the strongest backlinks cover a couple of my main keywords perfectly. Everything checks out but there is just one potential issue.

This site used to be a kind of resource site for the niche. What I mean is that it would copy articles from other sites, always stating the original source and linking to the original article. Nothing blackhat or spammy going on.

1. Would this site be okay to use?

2. Going through the wayback machine I can see that some of this content is no longer indexed anywhere on the web when I search for snippets on Google. I'm assuming it would be okay to use this content. Only issue is that should I use the original urls or add this content to new urls? My thinking is that if the site was penalised it might be a bad idea to use the original urls.

1. Yes.

2. Yes. You could make some slight URL variations, but you don’t have to. What makes you think the site is penalised? Does it show up first when you search the domain name? Are the anchors clean? If so, there’s nothing to worry about.
 
You should be careful with your purchase as expired domains have both pros and cons. You can use google link shortener to see if the link was previously penalized.

I'm worried the site may have been hit by a thin content penalty sometime in the past given that it was pretty much solely made up of copied content. It's the first result when searching domain.com but doesn't appear anywhere when I just search for the name of the site.
 
Generally that pattern you are talking about, means that the domain was serving as a PBN. Check page indexing and all that to verify that the domain is still online of Google.
 
Sounds to me like the URL is good. That it was a resource site linking to other sites doesn't bother me, so long as the sites linked to are legit sites and related to the niche. I'd probably resurrect the site from the archive as it is, let it index and get it into webmaster console and slowly add my own content and remove links to dead sites.
 
Just because it had a penalty before doesn’t mean it’s totally worthless. When you build a new site and send in a reconsideration request you should be good to go.

Check it via ahrefs.
Then tell domain authority and info about links.
Otherwise I don't know what to say, not enough information.
 
My usual criteria:

- Wayback Machine check for unexpected old history
- Moz spam score check
- Moz/Ahrefs Anchor texts check for strange-looking anchors
- Most strong backlinks are from which sites? Are they real authority sites?

That should give you a solid idea about how strong the domain is. Cheers :)
