If I get content from a magazine, and use their articles before other people do, can I get penalized by Google or Adsense?

What if (I am the first one to post this) the search results come back when Google checks, and it shows that it was from "X Magazine"?

If you use old magazines with no PDF's online, you would probably be fine.

Depends on how smartly you do this. You can check the articles with copyscape before posting. Another idea is to use such articles for back linking purpose only on web 2 sites made with fake email ids.
