Would this derank the competition?

So lately I've been reading a lot on the whole "Be careful with your PBN/BN backlinks to your main site because to many looks fishy" but what if we were to make a PBN and spam links of our competitors to derank them/penalize them. Just a thought I had last night, can this work? If so would using a PBN or BN be more effective to derank them, if so why?

Not really, its just a risk, not a method to lose rankings.

You are talking about negative seo and yes, many people do that to harm their competitors. Google claims that it is impossible, however, in fact IT IS possible and one of my affiliate websites has been penalized after penguin update when my competitor spammed me out.
