Is this going to get my site penalized by Google?
OK, here's the deal. I found site, probably 4 or 5 years ago, with good content that I wished to emulate. I bookmarked said site to go back over later and take notes but promptly forgot about it, as is the case with 95% of my bookmarked sites. I was cleaning out the browser today and went to the site. However, the site no longer exists and appears to have gone offline in 2014.

As I said, I liked the site's content, especially one page in particular. I had saved a copy of that webpage in PDF form as well as bookmarking it and was able to retrieve that PDF in my archives. Thus, I have all of the meaty text of the article at my disposal. Here's my idea/question/possible dilemma:

Is it acceptable to take the content of that article and put it up on my own website? (I searched for specific phrases from said content, it's not up anywhere else online.)

I'm curious if Google or other search engines will think it nefarious and punish my site/the page for the copied text?

No, you will not be penalized. Providing the content is not anywhere else on the web, Google will treat it as unique and use/index it accordingly. The only thing you may have to wrangle with are copyright issues if the original owner/creator requested you take it down, for whatever reason. Personally, I wouldn't worry.

You'll be fine. Run the content through copyscape if no results are found slap it on your domain ;)

you would not be penalized the content anywhere else online. before uploading the content you must conform the content not anywhere by using Copyscape

I think it's fine to use those articles since they are already gone on the web but run your content first in copyscape before you copy it.

Yes, You can use the content if it's not used anywhere in online. You will not get penalized for this. As others said just confirm the article with Copyscape and use those articles in your site.

You can definitely use the content without any worries of ramification from google or other search engine sites but if any of the content used has been copyrighted you are liable to either pay the creator for content use or be sued so make sure to be thorough in searching for any trace of the content online. if any info on the creator is in the content you may even want to contact them to get their approval to use their material you might also be able to gain access to more of their contact as well.
