I have an ecommerce site which sells clothes. As an example I have a keyword "red dresses" and then have a few backlinks pointing to the page which sells red dresses.

If i was to add a high quality blog post about red dresses would this end up benefiting both the products page and the blog post or potentially conflict?

one post probably wont do very much... if you market the post with facebook sponsored stories it might do better, but for SEO one low value backlink is not a game changer.

You wouldn't want to cannibalise your main page with another conflicting page. Having said that, sometimes it can be difficult to rank for product pages and a blog post page might be a better bet. Then the strategy could be to guide users from within the post to the target page. Another approach would be to try writing a post where your target word would be "red dress styles" or "iphone reviews", basically content revolving around the product.

That will be definitely beneficial for your website, But you need to update your blog page on a regular basis so that Google could find fresh content regularly and could get visitors for your website.

Yeah any blogs as long as they're well optimised and target properly (not spammed) the keywords you want such as relevant h-tags and keywords nicely evened out throughout the content. Just remember any new content g loves so a blog is just that, more content for your website.

Hi, @lunswor. I've been observing how my clients order articles. I'd say that many of them do what you mentioned above. However, they don't publish a blog post just once. Make sure you update your blog post regularly.

e-commerce websites are hard to promote with a couple keywords, I believe you should better target on promoting your brand name.

The strategy you have in mind will surely help but it is not enough. You have to consider some brand awareness strategies coupled with some classic linkbuilding schemes which will point towards your blog and to the main categories of your ecommerce site, too.
