They look too good to be true!!! The amount of traffic is too less to convert highly to recover amount invested. What say guys?

You clearly don't understand the concept of domaining...

OK about the domaining thing...But if the monthly uniques is so low as 1300/1400 over what period will the person who bought the website for such high price recover the invested amount. Now you can tell me some more about domaining..:D

<===noob here.

They aren't always bought on the basis of recovering income through parking revenues.

Probably 2 main reasons:

a) Speculation - expecting the value to rise over time
b) Branding/keyword - if you're Smirnoff, then buying a domain like Vodka.com obviously makes sense

My SEO would have rocked if I got any one such domain name. :D
It is really beneficial to get the targeted Keyword in your domain name..

Poker.com was sold for $27 Million. I come from the industry and I can confirm that..
Too bad that the poker room that bought this domain shut down when the US closed for players =)

I think that's the most expensive purchase to date and I doubt if anyone is stupid enough to repeat that mistake.

Exactly!... When California was voting on the legalization of pot. I heard that some domain speculators spent tens of thousands of dollars buying domain names related to marijuana in hopes of selling them later for huge profits.

Who would think that a 10 dollar domain name today could sell for thousands or even millions tomorrow.

Was that privately? I thought sex.com was the highest public sale.

If I remember correctly (And bear in mind - That was a good time ago and I've done a lot to override this info in my mind):

Poker.com was purchased by Pokerroom.com which was a Bwin brand.
In 2006, shortly before the US market shut down, they purchased the ONGAME network which is a (very bad) poker platform / network which was only good for Rakeback which is, in the business model - A very bad model for a poker network since rakeback is a shark bait and the people who leave the money on the table run away very fast (Those who lose money and deposit over and over) - It's more complicated than that since poker , unlike casino - Is a rake money machine, but that's the idea.

The US shut down and the rest is history - Worst purchase ever. 2 brands shut down (Poker.com and Pokerroom.com); Poker.com became a poker portal (Not successful) and Pokerroom.com is just an affiliate for party poker.

I believe the guys who lead this were fired and shamed.

SEX.COM is set to fetch a record $13m for a domain name on Wednesday October 27th when a Californian bankruptcy court meets to decide on the deal. The domain name last changed hands in 2006 for a reported $14m in cash and shares, but it was put up for auction in July after its owner went bust. This 2006 transaction does not appear on our chart, which compares the highest prices paid for domain names in cash only, and those that can be verified. It does not, for instance, include the purchase of Insure.com for $16m in 2009 because the related website was part of the deal. And the priciest domains may never be known. Many big sales are not made public, and these may account for the largest share of the domain-name market.

i read somewhere business.com was sold around $300 million...

Has anyone here ever typed in any of those names in address bar?
