Trial and error, I test a lot. I own a software stack, got in on it before the extra tax. There's a lot of no cost software out there too that is amazing on Github and such. Join marketing newsletters and you can pick up some info.
Agency work probably teaches you faster since you're dealing with different clients/problems all the time. personal projects are where you find out if you can actually make the stuff work without someone else setting the direction lol
I work with SEO agencies and have learned so much from doing so... then I put that knowledge into practice by working on my own projects to see it actually work for me and produce results, rather than only seeing results for clients : D
