Hmm, cant remember who posted it in the past but apparently this saying was invented by a university campaign with a goal of getting more students enrolled and in actual fact, doesn't have any solid basis. In other words, its not a good idea to try and work less hard, what you should really be doing is working harder AND smarter.
Its no surprise though because it is well known that as humans we have a tendancy to beleive something if it rhymes or fits together well in a sentance.

Purpose of formal education primarily is to teach you. It's not about exams. You might well have gotten better score, but how much do you know the subjects you like?
