    Normally when you edit the permalinks WP adjusts your .htaccess to look like this:

    # BEGIN WordPress
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
    </IfModule>

    # END WordPress

    Sometimes it can't do this because the folder where this file is can't be accessed (not writable).

    WP will warn you and give the code to add to the .htaccess at the bottom of the page where you change the permalink.
