Wordpress alone is bold enough to get you indexed and ranked.

But nothing beats optimization and that´s what plugins are for.

    Fine tuning.

One thing is to have an SEO plugin and one thing is to correctly set it up. Also you can try out Yoast seo plugin, it's still in beta but it has many many features

Wordpress alone would do it fair enough.
But guess what, plugins are made for something and that is why there are millions out there using them :)

    Good day!

The plugins have helped my sites out a ton, especially with getting the meta tags set up properly. Not sure why your rankings are suffering, but it could be the settings/input on some of your plugins.

I agree wordpress does a good job on its own but "the right" plugins do make a differance.

I am using Headway and it promised to have built-in SEO. Do I still need additional SEO plugin for just this purpose?

I think using AIO is the way to go for you if you're not willing to spend any money.
    OR
Search around the forums and you'll find some premium SEO plugins in the Downloads section :)

I'd go for some premium SEO plugins going around here in the downloads section :)
Download thesis and customize if you want even better results.

yes it is possible. On some of my blogs I tried this successfully. But I will have to spend more time customizing my theme. Actually I like to do it that way. But the plugins are really helpful to optimize your overall website seo and helps to improve each page's seo score in less time. Select the one which are popular and frequently updated so that you will not waste your time switching your plugin to another one.

I agree with almost everyone else. You don't need AIO but at the end of the day it doesn't really hurt. I personally prefer some of the premium plug-ins though. Look around, you can find some with a real nice interface.

I don't agree with many posters above that suggested WP will do without the plugins - WP still lack in major areas as METE tags, description, keywords. I would suggest using at least AIO SEO and set permalinks to /%postname/.
If you dropped ranks you did something wrong or is another issue. I never experienced this with proper set plugins. I use usually AIO, SEO slugs, SEO friendly images, permalinks redirect and a few more where needed.
