'...Not sure about a good 'source', but many have been shared here, if you care to do a search.

These are ONLY the FIRST and SECOND page of FIVE pages I found here on the forum. Literally hundreds!:

Otherwise here are some found after a Google-search:

    Code:
    [url]http://www.bestwpthemes.com/[/url]

    [url]http://www.acosmin.com/wordpress-themes/[/url]

    [url]http://www.templatesfeed.com/[/url]

Also posted on this forum by me is Wordpress Theme Design manual, so you can learn how to design your own themes:

This book walks through clear, step-by-step instructions to build a custom theme for
the WordPress open-source blog engine. The author provides design tips and suggestions
and covers setting up your WordPress sandbox, and reviews the best practices from
setting up your theme's template structure, through coding markup, testing, and
debugging, to taking it live. The last three chapters cover additional tips, tricks,
and various cookbook recipes for adding popular site enhancements to your WordPress
theme designs using 3rd-party plugins as well as creating API hooks to add your own
    custom plugins.

Whether you're working with a pre-existing theme or creating a new one from the ground
up, WordPress Theme Design will give you the know-how to effectively understand how
themes work within the WordPress blog system enabling you to have full control over
    your site's design and branding.

Who this book is written for:
This book can be used by WordPress users or visual designers who want to develop a
WordPress theme. You only need to be comfortable with the basics of web development
and this book will take care of the rest.

Here's my neat suggestion to you my bud, if you want a no-guilt theme for your blog, meaning totally free wordpress theme you can try yvoschaap Wordpress theme. This is a Wordpress Theme generator. You can personalize the theme without having a Phd in PHP.

I'd say don't worry about themes right now. Get a few but focus on content. Themes will come to you and you will find out what works well and what doesn't. I assume you are not a pro right now.

For instance, standard themes are dangerous if you want to give blogs away on a Mu site.

Amen! I agree with you Tilt4832. It's pointless to have the best template in the world if you don't have an informative articles available in your blog.

If your design is so bad that people don't want to stay around, that is bad too ...

While that is generally true, I haven't found too many wordpress free themes that outright suck. Yes there are some that are just not very well done, but with so many free themes at wordpress, it doesn't take long to find one that is at the very least decent, and then get the good content going. ;)

Ergo, the crucial factors in order to have a successful blogging venture are:

    1. Wordpress platform
    2. Good and Decent Template
    3. No-nonsense content
    4. Black and White Magic

I said some of this on another thread.

Take out as many of the links that come with the template.

Make or get a new header for the site.

    The uniqueness factor does help.

Links to your site, don't hurt either. :)

Just to add to this thread, this software seems to allow you to build your
own WP theme using a menu-driven interface:

    hxxp://www.artis*teer.c0m

    (In the URL:
    change xx to tt,
    remove the *
    change the zero to o)

I'm not endorsing it nor blasting it, but this software could be an option for some folks, who may have gotten tired of hunting for that "perfect" theme.

This is a paid software that is $100 but you can download a "free trial" just to test it out.

    Cheerio. :cow_yello
