I would check out the popular themes in the built in wordpress theme search. There is some pretty good stuff there.

My favourite free theme is Thematic. You get plenty of hooks if you know how to use them, and can pretty much make it look however you want.

I just found out about Batik and do really like it. Ofcurse you gotta costimize it some, just look at the terrible background.
I also changed the ads spots, shrunk it to fit 3 in a raw and show featured posts instead
