Wordpress Theme for a Painter

I am struggling to find a good free theme for a client who is an artist. Basically, there needs to be some type of portfolio / gallery where she can post her individual paintings with really short descriptions about each of them. New paintings need to be categorized by subject and then tagged with medium. The portfolio page needs to just display pictures in columns or something. I've tried several free themes and they all require stupid plugins or they aren't working.

I actually spent a good bit of time doing that without much success. I guess I'll keep trying. I was really trying to bust this out quickly

find some theme near what your client need and than customize it

To bust this out quickly, you've to remove the "free" word from your vocabulary for time-being.
