just checked the performance on google webmaster and it says my wordpress site is performing slow.

It states 63% of sites run faster then mine.

Any ideas why this is? Ive installed WP-Cache plugin, but that doesnt seem to have had any impact

Your hosting may be oversold. How is the response for static pages?

Just make one, and view it. Put a page up of a few k of text. If the server pauses (it should not be noticeable at all) the server itself may be slow.

If it seems fine with static stuff, your caching setup may not be working. You may have heavy pages as well.

Spoke to host provider. They told me the server is mostly idle and defo not being overloaded.

Does a large mysql database slow things down? I have a feeling it was the stats plugin I had in there

Depends on how large and the server but a typical wp install shouldn't be a problem.

It only takes one poorly coded plugin to bring a wp install to its knees.

Just check your plugins. A lot of those free wp plugs are not very perfomance friendly and slow your blog down. Take a look at which date your blogs starts to get slow and compare it with plugin installation.
