Wordpress silos pages vs categories

When creating silos in Wordpress why not just remove the /category/ from the url instead of using pages? search engines can still see the difference?

probably a stupid question but I was trying understanding these as it looks much easier than creating tons of pages and listing the posts.

There isn't a difference Seo Wise. Using a taxonomy like a category is normaly the way to go for this. Makes some things in live easier, like handling the hierachys in vanilla Wordpress. The slug isn't really relevant, you're absolutly right. But it might even help, to build a more structured silo.
