Wordpress SEO Plugin or Manual for Onpage SEO?

I'm curious to what you guys think is better for a beginner. I have a site that I'll be adding posts to and ranking them individually.

Should I use a wordpress seo plugin, or should I go ahead and do my onpage seo manually for wordpress?

If I use the plugin I'll definitely get myself familiar with every function before I actually use it.


**Also, I am using a premium theme from themeforest, what type of features are vital for a theme when it comes to onpage seo? I might have to scrap it for another one if it doesn't fit the criteria.

Manual is the best way in order to rank your website, SEO plugin will helping on title and description. You will need to make links manually in order to rank all your pages.

Everything depends entirely on your choice. You can do on-page seo manually, but seo plugin gives you lots of choices on how to best tweak you wordpress website. For example, with yoast seo plugin you can override title,keywords, description. You can also check keyword density, h1, h2 tags and some other features. The thing is you should be familiar with basic seo and be aware what you are actually doing with plugin.
For me, neither Wordpress nor its default themes are good enough for seo. So I use seo optimized theme plus yoast plugin. But for a small websites I use a basic seo plugin that allows manual title,keyword and description, plus some other plugins like xml sitemap (inbuilt in yoast), remove category base plugin ( also inbuilt in yoast) etc.
 
Mr.IMSEO, plugins are only used to put the Title, Description in pages/posts. some of them are used for to put keyword's too. But the manual link building is a proper/best/safe way to get ranking.

I see. For SEO optimized themes, do you have any features I should be looking out for? Also, thoughts on the theme linked in the op (link fixed btw)?

Yes, fast loading, less code, use of h1, h2 tags. Some themes take Title as H1 by default, so both becomes same. In that case, with the use of seo plugin, you can create a different title. You can check website loading speed and other performance at Gtmetrix.com. I use free themes. The one theme popular for seo is 'iconic one' - https://wordpress.org/themes/iconic-one , though I haven't used it yet. I find minimal themes and do some changes in code.

Try get a theme that doesn't use H1 tags for every single heading.

The downside to using a plugin is that it could slow down your site a little. However, it makes the on site work a lot easier. I'd say go for something like Yoast, if your site has been speed optimised already.
 
I use iconic-one for one of my sites. It's ok, I can't say that it's more seo optimized than other free themes but they did a good job regarding the loading time. Also, use it with Yoast WordPress SEO and manually seo optimize each post/page don't let it automatically generate titles and meta tags.

By "every single heading", do you mean the heading of each new post? If so, aren't those necessary if I'm ranking each post individually on google?

I use Yoast SEO plugin and it works really well - it helps with titles, meta descriptions etc but it also provides you with pointers on waht other factors you need to adjust to get the on page SEO perfect.
 
For a beginner, I would say manual would be a good choice, but you will have to know what you need optimized.
 
Manual means manual ... Mix a plugin with manual on page.

No, I mean if a page has multiple sections, for example. One h1 tag per page/post is fine.
 
I use the Yoast SEO plugin, although for my non-Wordpress website I do my SEO manually. The SEO plugin just helps me target the keyword more effectively and add meta tags, although it's nothing I can't do without the plugin.
 
I like Yoast also but do not use it much. Its nulled free and safe on many Torrent sites I would Imagine because it was on the Pirate Bay.
