wordpress root or subdirectory?

have just signed up for baby plan with HG and am about to make my first site.

should i install wp in root or sub directory?

apparently installing in root makes it untidy.

but i was thinking of sub directory so that i could work on it before making it 'live'.

Well is only part of your site going to be running on wordpress or is the whole site going to be on wordpress?

Personally I would place it in the root, then whilst developing place a .htaccess lock on the site allowing only you to see it until you are ready.

You can noindex it from the settings page in wordpress too

@lucasbraydon - all sites will be wp based.

@tg01 - from what ive read so far it seems you are right, that root is recommended. Any reasons though?

by this, do you mean an ip address restriction using .htacess file?

Why is root recommended? If you want multiple wp sites on a single hosting account go with subdirectories, it will save you a lot of trouble. Use .htaccess to redirect to each wp install. Simple.

root... the only time you wouldn't install it in the root is if you had a completely functional site already and wanted to add the framework to a certain page. if you don't install it in the root, you will not be able to control your homepage from the WP dashboard, and you will have to build it from scratch.

i understand that with HG baby plan, there is only one cpanel, one public_html etc for all your add on domains. And with what you say it will eventually look like this:

domain1.com - public_html/wordpress (this is root folder installation)
domain2.com - public_html/domain2folder/wordpress (add-on domain)
domain3.com - public_html/domain3folder/wordpress (add-on domain)

Is it correct to say that all add-on domains using WP will have to be installed in the same public_html, hence subdirectories are recommended...to avoid root having too many wp installations?

You have Baby plan...

You'll need to use the Addon Domains function to add each domain name you want to use, then set the nameservers in your domain CP to point to your HG hosting account.
Then, install WP into the root of each ADDON domain you have created.

So, you have your main hosting account with several addon domains hosted under it.

Only use the main hosting account to host your separate websites, each under their own subdir.

i'm confused. you said i should install WP into the root of each add on domain.

but at the end you said that each should have their own subdir?

Use ADDON DOMAINS function to create your new directories that will be used to host all your other domain names so...

Say you buy 3 new domains.

web1.com
web2.co.uk
web3.info

Use ADDON DOMAINS to create all these new accounts. You will now have new folders in your main hosting account.

mainhosting.com
>web1.com
>web2.co.uk
>web3.info

In your CP now go to Fantastico and select Wordpress.
New Install and then use the drop down to select what domain you want to install it on.

Install it to the root of web1.com (for example)

As long as you have set the nameservers in your domain CP to point to your HG account and it has propagated when you visit web1.com you will see the new install.

Using your FTP client, you will see that each website you have installed will have its own folder in your main account. This is because the Addon Domain function creates a new subdirectory for each domain.
