Wordpress plugins update, good or not?

I am kind of skeptical when it comes to updating my wordpress plugins (now I have over 20 that needs updates) because in the past a single plugin update messed up my entire site badly.

Is there a way to find out if the newer plugin version will cause any troubles before performing the update?

What do you guys do, do you ever upgrade or not?

Keep all plugins updated to latest version for sure is the best way to support wordpress site, especially for security. BUT, when update some plugin has big chance to broke some functionality on wordpress theme or wordpress theme to not suupport them. I will make test server to test how plugin will work with theme/wordpress and after that will install plugin on production. Upgrade only if this is possible and don't need much work on production site, and still you must upgrade in the future.
 
Take site Backup >> Update plugins (if your site breaks, just restore the backup). If you don't update regularly, there is a high chance that your site will get f*cked.
 
Yes, we need to update regularly. Better take a DB backup before updating plugin.
Not all the plugin will mess our site but may few.
 
I update my site regularly. BUT,

I usually wait for about 1-2 weeks after new versions of each plugins before updating.

By doing that, I have time to see if any problems with the new updates. This is, indeed, very useful. Because some plugins have lots of problem with the new version. It usually takes them a few more versions to be stable.

Tip: whenever you see new version of the plugin, check their support page.

Recently, there is 1 plugin on my site has 4 new versions pushed within 1 week to fix error.

Install local host, put WordPress on it and test there, that's what I do
 
Its best practice to keep your plugins updated. As others have mentioned you can always to do a backup of your site first if your worried about it.
 
Read the description first. I update a plugin only with critical fix.

What about plugins that are deactivated (but not deleted) is it necessary to update those as well or do they not matter?
 
I recommend both plugin&theme updates ( also, don't forget to update the WordPress ), for security reasons. Before any update, make sure you have a backup of your entire site.
