wordpress or custom?

Hi,

I am a developer by trade. I have been looking into some kind of affiliate marketing as another income stream.

I have done my keyword research and am ready to go to the next step however, I have a question.

I know a lot of you guys are using wordpress for your sites. I understand why, its easy. lots of plugins and it can be up and running quickly.

If I was to build an affiliate site without using wordpress, joomla, shopify, etc would people still want to purchase it?

By getting rid of the bloat and security issues that wordpress comes with, I know i can make a leaner, faster and more secure site then a wordpress site. Plus there are some things I can do that wordpress just cant.

Whilst this may give me an advantage over wordpress sites, will people still want to purchase the site?

It depends on your client demographic, if your buyer want convince they would choose WP because of its familiarity and mobile apps, but if they are serious business custom will be the choice
 
Thanks for that mate, I have experience in making sites in both wordpress and custom sites. Just was not sure if they would sell if not in a CMS that most people use.

Well to me it seems you want to build affiliate website for a client or clients... And you are unsure whether you should build it on wordpress or Custom... And I thought you could utilize your skills by actually participating in one of the projects for a pay... But now seeing your attitude I wouldn't just let you near any of my projects but I wouldn't even try your product no matter what it is built on... Wordpress or PHP...
 
If the client can see the value of a custom CMS you made, go for it, but if they cant... don't waste your time building the site from the scratch and use Wordpress. So the answer is it depends of the type of client you have.

Just to help clear up some confusion. I am not building this for any of my clients. its for me. Providing it goes well, I am hoping to stop building things for clients.
 
You can do almost everything within WordPress. I think there is no such thing that WordPress cannot do. You just need to make it work with WordPress. It's normal that WP doesn't have all things already created, so I would pick WP instead of creating everything custom and from zero. You can make the WP site very fast if you know how and with fast hosting, and it's better and easier for SEO.

Just hang in there with the clients mate! Things don't work that way so fast. What language are you considering PHP? The best advice is to test, maybe build few pages optimize and backlink, then if you see traction you scale. I my opinion if the custom build isn't giving a bad UX, then there should be no issues.

I dont believe he misunderstood your question. You say you are building for personal use and then ask if people will still want to purchase it.

If the website requires new content on a regular basis CMS will make the job much easier. If you plan to sell it at some point 'people will still want to purchase it' most people are familiar with wordpress so they would pick up a website thats built on it rather than waste their time or their developers trying to familiarize themselves with your code. However if your website is profitable you could you would probably still find a buyer no matter what you choose to make it. However it might affect the end price you are offered.

From a user perspective if a user will purchase something on your website if its not made on wordpress or a similar cms. I dont think they could care less.

Go for Wordpress+WooCommerce (or even better Shopify). I am a web dev myself, and I know I can do anything that your average CMS can't, but the time is too valuable to reinvent the wheel. Wordpress/Shopify will cover 99% of your needs, while the remaining 1% can be easily hand-coded. Better focus on the commercial aspects, not code.
 
Just smoke a fag, mate, and chill. Since you are a developer you already know the answer.
 
If you will have a limited traffic website, then wordpress (its very very good for seo), if however you will run a high traffic site (like adult tube or image hosting) then build custom, because wordpress wont handle the traffic....

Wordpress can handle high traffic if server has enough power. Need to use caching and optimize mysql for speed then work well )
 
Yes, wordpress can handle high traffic, but the cost is higher + several required plugins..optimizations!
 
There are a lot of popular websites that were created with WP for exemple: New York Times. People usually offer custom website to make uniqe design or service,
