People are always saying you need a .com... or at least that you do not want .blogspot or .wordpress in your URL

I know people say it looks unprofessional and such. Which I definitely agree... But is there any other reasons why you would not want to go cheap and keep it free?

In terms of monetizing the blog... I know wordpress/blogspot owns your site/blog if you go free and dont have your own domain and such...

Is it true if you start monetizing they will shut down your blog? Or is it just LEGALLY they are allowed to shut it down... or steal the blog from you when you get really big or lots of traffic? but they dont do it and people just think since they have the ABILITY to do so, why risk it? type of thing.

Also is monitizing the blog the same even if you go free? (wordpress.com) or are there different set of rules. I tried searching via blackhatworld... but my search skills or the sites search sucks. (or both).

Over blogspot you can add Adsense , but in wordpress blogs AFAIK you are not allowed to add Ads.

Because domains are dirt cheap. $10/year for a .com domain and that's if you don't find a discount. A good domain is great bang for the buck in the long run.

Thats cool... but ultimately you are paying yearly for what? Not to mention if you buy a domain you have to host it. Which also cost money... I've seen it cheap... but whenever i hear cheap hosting I hear about all the problems it comes with.

Is it possible to create your own domain? I know you can buy a domain... from one of the million places that offer it and their hosting... but how do you get your own? I see that big places that offer domains have other things like... .net/.me/biz ect... How do they create their own domain suffixes and then sell them... It really feels like they are printing money.

You search for your domain that you want... then they say "oh its available"... Pay this much a month. Can't you just create your own?

WordPress self host is better than WordPress.com. hosting is cheap, just look in the marketplace. Free hosting is pointless for what you are looking for as they restrict the amount of traffic. Invest a few dollars and earn properly

I wouldn't say they print money. From what I've gathered there is no money in domains, they need to sell other services like website hosting, email services and whatever to make a profit.

You can buy a domain without hosting, just point your domains DNS settings towards your free wordpress.com hosted wordpress site? I don't know if there are any free alternatives but the wordpress.com seems to support custom domains for €13/year/domain: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

think about it. it kinda is printing money... like passively. you go on their site... you have a domain name decided and put in what you want... if it is available... they lease it to you... for a price. yes its cheap. but what... maybe 1 out of 100 domains actually become a real site? with real content and stuff? the other ones get forgotten or put on an excel sheet for someone to possibly use in the future. all the while the company is making a killing with BONUS addons. I mean I dont hate them for it. I just wanna know how they sell the domains and create new ones... like .biz.online.shop... some seem pretty legit IF search engines treat them equally (i know it wasnt the case in the past)... but to the average consumer... I can see .US working really well for some niches... same with .online and .shop... How do they create these new ones... and how do they create the .com domains for our sites?

I might end up caving and just get hosting and a domain if i could find a provider that allows cheap monthly payments and not a bait and switch from like 3.99 first month then 19.99 Just curious why they would limit traffic? I can understand what TYPE of traffic... but isnt it mutually beneficial for wordpress... for millions of people coming to my site? If it has real content that people want to see? Or do they sell excess traffic...

They will not allow millions on free hosting, so you need to pay.

You realize they can't just sell you a domain name and walk away right? How do you manage your domain? Through their infrastructure, that they developed and pay for hosting and keep developing. How many emails to support or how many minutes calling their support center before they've lost money on you buying that domain? Just imagine the support staff cost of dealing with customers that thought they bought a website when they bought a domain and then you're going to walk them through how to use that domain.

If you think it's a booming business to compete with the likes of Google and One.com to sell domain names for $10/year, go nuts, let me know how it went :)

Simple thing, you cannot rank with subdomain
1$ .com is way far better to use..

You cannot rank good with a subdomain + it doesn't allow ads in most ways.

Why not just buy a couple dollars domain name? If you can't afford that, I suggest you to stop.
