There are a couple of good ones out there. Private WP comes to mind.

better than a plugin, is the highly acclaimed wp theme PROFITS THEME which amongst other things incorporates a membership site as part of its arsenal:

    download it here:

    Code:

Idev is a google membership integration program too that helps sell products if needed, offers an affiliate program, kinda of complicated to setup, but it integrates with vbulletin if you ever want a forum.

There's a plugin called "WordPress Access Control" and it's free. I haven't used it myself but it comes highly recommended. You can search for it at WordPressDOTorg. Here's a brief description:

    WordPress Access Control

Restrict pages, posts and custom post types to members, nonmembers or specific roles and still add to navigation.

WordPress Access Control is a plugin designed to integrate into membership sites where certain pages, posts and custom post types should only be available to members of the site. The plugin offers fine tuned features for this purpose, including the ability to set site wide defaults and override these on a per-page basis.
You can easily set a page to be accessible only by members of your site, or even a specific role. You can also set pages to be accessible only to non-members of your site, useful for registration pages.

its a NULLED copy, so youre not backlinking to anyone. take it for a test drive: doesnt cost you anything and you may even like it....
