Ive got a little side project that Im working on that involves a membership based fee (per month) paying site , from looking around iot seems my options are :-

    1. Wordpress with a plugin like magic members or similar
    2. Joomla with a membership type addon
    3. PHP script only with a mySQL db - and if so which one - there seems to be lots available

I'd be interested in your thoughts on which one would be more robust and which would be the easy option. It is adult based so the only real payment gateway open is ccBill - I guess ?

    Any opnions welcome

PHP Script with MySQL will be the robust among your listed options but WP with membership plugins will be the easiest one to get going real quick. Take the joomla out of the equation. It's limited and not so easily extendable.

That was similar to my thoughts - I looked at Magic Members as it has ccBill integrated into it.
Anyone used a decent php script / mySQL package - there seems to be lots out there though

I never tried any ready-made scripts as I code on my own. Try searching in the BHW marketplace's web design section and if you can't find any, post a thread on hire a freelancer section. If you're in hurry, checkout codecanyon. You can see a demo for most of the scripts and pickup the one which suits your use case the best.

Because of the need for additional options - I am leaning towards a wordpress solution - I'll at alternatives to Magic Members, that have payment gateways that are adult friendly like ccBill, if anyone has any opinions on what WordPress membership plugins please add your opinion

Definitiely Joomla for this. I built something similar, a social network using Jomsocial and not only does it have extensive features it is also scalable and plays the part whereas doing this one wordpress would have been confusing and hit and miss with different plugins and you wrestle to find the right one

Jomsocial is one fully integrated plugin that makes it easy to build communities even though wordpress overall is the easier CMS to use, Joomla takes the lead here

I don't really recommend Joomla due to it's lack of proper documentation. Wordpress is obviously the easiest option to go for. If you have time, you could build something using Laravel/ Yii2 framework. In-fact, Yii 2 and Laravel both already have CMSs extensions to ease your task. These are much much more extensible than WP or any other cms.
Keep in mind, if you are going to have a high traffic website, you'll need Query caching and full page caching, which is well supported by most of the modern frameworks.

If you end up using WP, then s2member is a good plugin for membership sites.

By the way, I don't recommend custom php scripts as well, because it takes too much time to get something done if you are going to do everything from scratch. Don't reinvent the wheel as they say ;)
