This new Jetpack thingy on Wordpress - I have never bothered with it but as I am creating some new blogs, I am now wondering whether to add them. Other than a couple of widgets, what really is the point and benefit of this and are there any drawbacks associated it or having to register the site with Wordpress?

I use it for stats and other interesting stuff. No penalty, that's for sure.

Whatever authority association wordpress.com has with your blog coming from wordpress will definitely help, as mentioned- the statistics help and some other widgets.
