wordpress homepage SEO question

I'm in the process of editing my site to try and optimise it for SEO and keyword ranking. I have installed the yoast plugin in my site which allows me to edit the keyword and meta titles for my various pages. The problem I'm having is that I can't seem to edit anything for my homepage.

example:

I can edit the options for:
website.com/cart/
website.com/privacy-policy/
website.com/my-account/ etc.

but I cannot edit the details for:
website.com

this is the page I would like to rank as its the main page of the site, I do not have static front page set and the main page is posts aswell as having some slideshows on it and featured product categories.

How can I can I edit this so that it counts as an actual page that i can rank so that if I google my website the actual page it shows is website.com and not another page such as the privacy policy?

That means you don't have enough little bit knowledge about the Code. By the way If you want to add Meta in HP. Then you should go to the header.php and edit in <head>section. If you really don't understand, then install this plugin to setup home page meta data.

Use yoast seo plugin to define meta title and description for your site, it's pretty easy with it.

The problem I have though is that I can do this for individual pages but not the home page. When i google my site the pages that appear are the likes of my privacy policy page but not my main page.

I'm looking for a solution to create my homepage in a way that i can use yoast to set the meta title and description.

If you do not use a static page, I do not think you can set a focus keyword. However, please be aware that do not worry too much about keyword density on a dynamic wordpress homepage. Otherwise, you would need to force homepage keywords into every article excerpt which would make it look extremely odd. You can maintain keyword density on a dynamic homepage. If you know a bit of coding (and depending on the complexity of the theme/framework), you can add a slight static area either at above or below the slider to place some static content with your keywords.

You're going about it the wrong way I think. Your homepage isn't quite ranking because it's constantly changing on account of the list of various blog posts. If your privacy page is showing up over your homepage or any other page it basically means that this page has better onsite SEO than the other pages. Perhaps it has better keyword density. Most privacy pages tend to repeat the name of the company and name of the niche/products over and over so if your company/niche/product is being utilized better on this page than on other pages it would rank higher. Use it as a template to figure out what you are doing wrong for your blog posts.

If you want the home page to stand out I would recommend adding static content to it and then using a widget to show the latest articles. That way it can always be referenced by specific keywords since they never leave the page. Once a visitor is on the page they can still see what's new and this will help with driving traffic to those other pages. A homepage for a website that is primarily selling products shouldn't just be bloggy. It should tell people what you are all about and why they should trust you. It should tell them why they should spend money at your company instead of somewhere else...and then a call to action...and then show the latest blog updates.

You also need some other pages that are static which are optimized for your keywords. There is no way that your privacy page should be the most prominent one in the serps. Let's say that you have a website about dog collars and each article is about different brands of collars that you are reviewing or news articles about dog collar companies. On top of those you should have some static pages like an article about safe use of dog collars, how to choose the right size collar for your dog, etc. Link those in your menu bar and drive traffic to them. Within those articles link to specific blog posts so that you have goo internal linking.

You might also way to review your product pages. Perhaps they need more content or better descriptions for each product.

I prefer using the genesis framework which takes care of seo pretty well. Yoast is good too, but too many settings.
