If you sign up to askimet and get an API key (free and takes about 5 mins) it does work, very well.

Akismet works pretty well, you need to get an API key from wordpress .com

Close the registration / comments form and add disqus to the comments section.

By the way akismet and recaptcha do work.

I do this on most of my WP sites to stop comments.

    1) Go to Appearance
    2) Click Editor
    3) Click Comments
    4) Command (Control for Windows) A
    5) Delete

    Ends all comments.

Or alternatively set to moderate, so they have to be manually approved

This is good but you'll spend the rest of your days moderating comments. One site I work on will quickly pile up 600+ in the moderation queue, ends up nuking legit comments.

Also I would only leave comments on for sales posts, off for everything else. For general content, leaving comments on just invites the "I must have an opinion on everything" types which add zero value.

No and it's a bit of a pain for large sites, ok for new sites though. I use the 'ol functions php file trick when launching new blogs that makes spam comments unclickable, gives a new site a kick-start
