Most users decide within a few seconds whether to stay or leave, so fast loading, clear typography, and a simple layout matter more than extra features. Slow sites kill engagement instantly. Use a lightweight theme (GeneratePress or Kadence), optimize images with ShortPixel, and get decent hosting. Nobody waits 5 seconds for a blog to load.
Internal linking. Keep people clicking to other posts. I add 3-5 relevant internal links per article. Reduces bounce rate and increases pages per session, which Google loves.
Better headlines and intros. Most blogs lose people in the first 3 seconds. Write headlines that promise a specific benefit, then deliver it in the first paragraph. No fluff.
Related posts plugin and email popup. Show related content at the end of posts so people keep reading. Exit-intent popup for email capture. If they're leaving anyway, might as well try to get them on your list.
Honestly though, if your content targets the wrong keywords or doesn't match search intent, none of this matters. Use Keywords Cluster or similar to make sure you're writing what people actually want to read.

I’d focus more on personality and experience than just speed and themes. Add a short author intro with a real photo, tell small stories in your posts, and write like you’re talking to one person and not the internet.

The most important metric is page speed. If your speed is good you gain a better ranking from Google. Also make sure that your content is readable and interesting. Lastly make your site mobile friendly as many people choose to search things about your niche via their phone. That ensures that you don't loose visitors when they are visiting your site from their cellphones.

Use licensed themes, premium themes usually offer more features and look much better than free ones. Optimize internal links to improve user experience and enhance content quality.

User impression starts with loading speed. If your WP blog takes more than 3 seconds to load, most users will bounce before they even see your content. I'd recommend using a lightweight theme like GeneratePress or Astra, and definitely optimize your images. A clean, clutter-free layout usually keeps people reading longer than a site filled with too many widgets and ads.
