Wordpress API: can you use it to post without paying?

I was excited to use python to automate my Wordpress posting, I got it to work with Blogger and Tumblr, but every time I look at tutorials on how to post use the Wordpress API, it says I need to install some kind of authentication plugin.

You need to pay some annual fee in order to install plugins so this is not a scalable solution. However I know that you can post to Wordpress using Scrapebox so there must be a way around this, so what's the deal?
