Yea, it only takes 1 broke backup to make your day 
And for those above reporting "no probs" for 10 or 40 or whatever number of blogs, imagine that one day you could bite the bullet and be forced to repair, roll back or even re-install those blogs
I had one such experience long time ago, since then I never update straight after release - I even waited 2 months to go for WP 2.1.
It's a good practice to wait the plugin devs to catch up and in case of major updates like 3.3 browse some forums to see what problems others have - I found about many issues from forums.
I backup my main blogs daily and the rest weekly with a plugin and I would never install WP without the db backup plugin. You might only need it once but will save your skin then - well worth the 2 mins to configure it
And about the guy who started the thread- you don't need to delete plugins, just rename the plugin folder...
