Should I be overly concerned with a words quality score?

It seems like i will get a low quality score if I put a apostrophe, or a different spelling variation

I have switched over to displaying on the content network only, will a low quality score allow the ads to show?

Quality score is one of the most important numbers you can understand and optimize in your account. Quality Score Is Only Calculated by Precise Matches. When examining the quality score factors, do not worry about the click-through rate or related queries for your phrase and broad match keywords. If you add the same keyword as an exact match, phrase match, and broad match keyword, all three versions will have the same quality score. That quality score will be derived from the exact match version. If you have a broad match keyword that does not have the exact match equivalent in your ad group, then Google will calculate the quality score for that keyword based upon the times when the search query matched your keyword precisely. Therefore, it is useful to either use an exact match version of all your keywords or run the search query report to see the actual CTR of your phrase and broad match words when attempting to optimize for quality score.

If you want to save money, then yes, worry about quality score. The higher the quality score, the lower the cost per click it'll take to rank in the position you want. So if the quality score for my keyword is $2, it might cost me $10 to rank for number 1 while someone else with the same keyword that has a quality score 8, might only cost $3.

No, low quality scores on either the search or content/display network won't get the ad to show and it's usually displayed under the status column. Remember, Google is all about relevancy so as long as you don't put a mortgage loan keyword for your online mba degree page, you should be fine.

I agree with what @clin407 said above. However, QS on content network is calculated a bit differently than on the Google search network. On the content network, your keyword and ad copy's relevancy to the placement, the quality of landing page as well as the performance of the ad on that and similar placement are considered.
